Mineral Wells, WV; Hall of Fame Promoter Carl Short has a very special plan in place for race fans attending the 30th Annual Dirt Track World Championship at West Virginia Motor Speedway. For this years event All Adult Tickets will be a full access pit pass! “I really wanted to make the 30th running of the DTWC special for the fans and with the pit pass the fans will get a chance to walk around the pits and get an up close and personal look at the cars and some of the other things that fans in the stands don’t get to see normally”, said Short. Also due to the large layout and great number of seats at West Virginia Motor Speedway there will not be any reserved seating for this event!
EVERY ADULT ADMISSION WILL BE A PIT PASS!!!!!
That way the fans can walk about the pits, the souvenir trailers and then go take a seat in the stands for the race. “We really want to make this year’s 30th annual DTWC an event that people will be talking about 30 years from now the way people are still talking about the first one now." Short stated

DIRT TRACK WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TO WVMS - Crown Jewell event to returns to West Virginia for 30th Anniversary
Powell, TN; “Take me home country roads” That’s where the 30th annual Dirt Track World Championship is headed. It's going back to West Virginia, the state where it all began. Promoter Carl Short is pleased to announce that the DTWC will be held at the famous "SPEEDPLANT", West Virginia Motor Speedway in Mineral Wells, WV. Short’s decision to carry the DTWC back to the Speedway that holds the DTWC attendance record wasn’t an easy one. "This was one of the most gut wrenching decisions I have ever had to make" said Short. "Not going back to Lawrenceburg was a decision I really hated to make."
" It is an amazing facility and Dave and Kim Rudisell are just great folks. "The weather last year really created havoc with track prep and Dave and Tim Johnson were on the track for like 48 hours straight" "I have never seen anyone work harder in an attempt to have a good racing surface and their dedication proved worthwhile as the racing on Sunday was fantastic". "I am hoping to have the opportunity to work with them again someday" Short said.
Carl also had several conversations with Jeff Schrader at KC Raceway. Schrader is going into his second year as owner and promoter of KC. "The DTWC was very successful the 4 years it was held at KC and I have gotten to know Jeff and developed a great respect for him. He has a great love for racing and is just a wonderful human being."
In the end one of the big factors was the fact this is the 30th annual DTWC and Short felt it was only fitting that racing's second biggest major event be held in the state where it all started 30 years ago. "Even though it's not the same track, it is as close as you can get to the original location" Short stated.
As long as there is dirt track racing, people will be talking about Jim Dunn's incredible Cinderella story and how he won the biggest purse that had ever been paid on dirt. In our tribute to Jim, we are once again going to be having the Jim Dunn Memorial non-qualifiers race along with the modifieds and $50,000 to win DTWC.
West Virginia Motor Speedway will reopen this year under the management team of BDS Promotions. Short has worked with BDS the past few seasons with his Hillbilly Hundred and has nothing but praise for the young management team. "Brian Ferrell, Scott Strode and Daniel Patterson did a fantastic job in their promoting of Tyler Co Speedway and I'm sure they will do the same at WVMS" Short stated.

Jimmy Mars Victorious in $50,000 to win 29th Annual Dirt Track World Championship Race at Lawrenceburg Speedway
LAWRENCEBURG, IN (October 18, 2009) – Picking up his third $50,000 win of 2009 Jimmy Mars of Menomonie, WI won the 29th Annual Dirt Track World Championship Presented by 4m.net on Sunday afternoon at Lawrenceburg Speedway. The 37-year-old racer held off Brady Smith of Solon Springs, WI for the victory which was his first in the dirt late model racing crown jewel event which was held at Lawrenceburg for the first time. Trailing the pair of Wisconsin standouts to the finish line were Rick Eckert of York, PA, Earl Pearson Jr. of Jacksonville, FL and Steve Francis of Ashland, KY.
Ray Cook and Mars made up the front row for the 100-lap event as Cook grabbed the early lead of the race followed by Mars, Eckert, Francis and Jimmy Owens. Cook looked strong from the outset pushing his lead up to three-car length in the early going on the sun-bathed race track.
It took Cook only nine laps before he started to pick up the tail end of the field as both Mars and Eckert sliced into his lead as all three cars were running neck and neck by the eleventh circuit. With 15 laps scored the top five from the onset remained the same as the battle for the lead was getting intense in traffic.
The trio of Cook, Mars and Eckert were then joined by Francis and Shane Clanton who had passed Owens for fifth on lap 22 and was on the move as the top five were all on the same straightaway of each other with a quarter of the race in the record books.
Cook held the lead until lap 28 when Mars made his move for the points passing Cook to take over the lead of the race. Once Mars was in front he started to immediately open up some distance between himself and the tight battle among Cook, Eckert, Francis and Clanton.
The first caution of the race flew on lap 34 for a slowing Jason Feger which would bunch the field up for a Delaware double file-restart. An exciting restart would ensue with Eckert clearing Cook for second a lap into the restart as Mars continued to show the way.
A long green flag stretch of racing would then see the front-running Mars continued to look solid as a terrific battle for second was going on between the cars of Eckert, Cook, Clanton and Francis. Clanton climbed to third around Cook on lap 46 using the low line on the race track as Mars continued to pace the field at the half-way mark of the event.
In traffic Mars saw his lead shrink as Eckert and the rest of the field behind him started to track down Mars. Eckert closed right up to Mars on lap 62 and the pair went side-by-by side for the top spot. For two laps the due raced hard with each other as Mars would carry his momentum off the corners to keep the lead.
Eckert then made a slide job move on lap 65 in turn four grabbing the lead momentarily from Mars, but Mars fought back and a lap later he was back out in front as Clanton stuck his nose in the hunt for the lead making it a fantastic three-car race for the lead.
Once Mars got back in front of Eckert, he picked up the pace and started to open up some distance between himself, Eckert and Clanton. With Mars back in control of the race the second caution would come out with 74 laps scored for Clint Smith, whom was about to be lapped by Mars, who at this point of the race had put three lapped cars between himself and the second place running Eckert.
On the restart Mars continued to show his prowess in leading the race as Francis became a player for the top spot as he passed Clanton for third on lap 75 and then started to put the heat on Eckert for second just as the third and final caution of the race came out for Brian Birkhofer with 76 laps complete.
The final restart of the race would see Francis get by Eckert for second as he then set his sights on Mars as a new contender was starting to emerge with tenth place starting Brady Smith who had been quietly running in the top ten for the entire race came out of nowhere as he was up to third putting the pressure on Francis for the second spot with twenty laps remaining.
Smith then hounded Francis for several laps finally getting by him on lap 87. With 13 to go Mars looked like he was well on his way to victory lane, but Smith quickly shot down that notion as closed right on the rear deck lid on Mars with ten to go.
Mars, who had run most of the race using the top line around the high-banked track, would see Smith gain ground on the bottom as he then moved down a line when he saw Smith out of the corner of his eye trying to pull even in the final five laps.
Moving down on the track was a smart move for Mars because it looked like Smith had the momentum down there and was going to steal the win away from Mars, but Mars was able to keep Smith at bay in the final laps as he went on to score an incredible third $50,000 win of the 2009 racing season. His other lucrative wins came in the USA Nationals at Cedar Lake (WI) Speedway and the North-South 100 at Florence (KY) Speedway a race he won on the final lap.
It also marked another impressive win for the M-B Custom Chassis in which Mars and his brother Chris and fellow driver Brian Birkhofer have a made a staple in victory lane over the last year. Smith in his Mid-States Equipment/Big Red Motorsports/Bloomquist Race Cars Monte Carlo SS would finish second after starting tenth followed by Eckert in the Raye Vest Excavating/Ritchie Sandblasting/Bloomquist Race Cars Cadillac, 13th starting Earl Pearson, Jr. in the Bobby Labonte Racing/Lucas Oil Slickmist/MasterSbilt who made a last lap pass on Francis who was driving the Tim Logan Racing/Morehead Auto Truck Parts Sales/Rocket by Logan GTO to snare the fourth spot.
Completing the top ten were Shane Clanton of Locust Grove, GA, Josh Richards of Shinnston, WV, Tim McCreadie of Watertown, NY, Eddie Carrier, Jr. of Salt Rock, WV and Ray Cook of Brasstown, NC. Carrier was the Hard Charger of the Race finishing ninth after starting in 20th.
In victory lane Mars couldn’t believe he held on for the win. “I had my hands full out there, I didn’t know whether to go low or high, the sun was in my eyes going into three, Ray (Cook) was awesome at the beginning and he and I had a heck of a good race there for while and we got around him, the here comes Eckert and Brady, I didn’t know where I needed to be here, so I finally decided to move down low, for a day race you couldn’t ask for a better race,” said Mars who became the seventh different winner of the race in the last seven years.
“I have to thank Carl Short for putting on such a great event and sticking his neck out despite the bad weather when we got here, it turned out great with the weather today, this is unbelievable, like I said we’ve had a great year, I have to thank my brother Chris and my crew guys Andy and Russ and Dave Deppe for all of his help, if it wasn’t for those people we couldn’t do this, I saw Brady there a few times and I said we might be in trouble because he was getting traction down there and I went down there a little and saw what he was doing, I said to myself don’t screw up now and when I saw the five to go signal and tried to be smooth the rest of the way and it paid off,” said the winner.
Mars’ M-B Customs Malibu is sponsored by Deppe Enterprises, Baileigh Industrial, BSB Manufacturing, Chevytown USA.com, Mid-States Equipment Company, T.L. Sinz Plumbing and Heating, VP Racing Fuels, Hoosier Tires and Integra Racing Shocks.
Smith who nearly pulled off the win said afterwards if he could have cleared Mars he might have been too able to be standing in victory lane where Mars was. “We gave it all we had I thought a couple of times I was going to get by him, but he did what he had to do, we had a good clean race out there, it was really a great fun race to run, he came down where I was running a few times and that was the difference, we are disappointed we didn’t win, we shouldn’t be ashamed to finish second against these guys today, he is one of the best if not the best right now, we’ll take second and go home and try to get better next time.”
Also on the racing card was the sprint car main event which was taken by Robert Ballou of Fishers, IN. and the open wheel modified feature which was won by Jason Wheatley of Loretto, KY.
In the 25 lap $5,000 to win sprint car finale Ballou took the lead from Brady Short of Bedford, IN who led the first ten laps of the race. Ballou who used the top line around the track to take the lead then had to fight off the repeated challenges from Short who was trucking along on the bottom groove of the track. Short made one last ditch effort on the final lap to as coming off of turn number four heading to the checkers he got a run on Ballou, but Ballou was able to hold him off by just one car length for the win in the MPHG Promotions Inc owned Triple X Chassis care sponsored by JC Plew, Behavior Consultants, Hinchman Uniforms and Circle Wheels.
Trailing Ballou and Short across the finish line were John Memmer of Evansville, IN, Nic Faas of Brownsburg, IN and Jeff Bland Jr. of Bloomington, IN.
In the 30 lap open wheel modified main Jason Wheatley fought off the early advances of Jared Landers as he eventually cruised on for the $3,000 victory in his Larry Shaw Chassis. Wheatley and Landers had a torrid battle for the lead in the early going until Landers had an incident with the wall coming off of turn four ending his night
Wheatley then went unchallenged the rest of the way to secure the win. A near photo-finish for second saw Doug Adkins of West Portsmouth, OH barely edge out Skylar Marlar of Winfield, TN. Shelby Miles of Bloomington, IN was fourth followed by Rick Corbin of Independence, KY
Wheatley’s Mullins Racing Engines powered car is sponsored by B&W Metals, Rosewood Golf Course, St. Joe Garage, VFM Manufacturing, Wheatley Seamless Gutters, Wheatley Tile Flooring, Wheatley Auto Sales, Brady Excavating, Ginter and Mattingly Heating and Air, Bryan Wheatley Landscaping, Springfield Auto and Farm Supply, Central Kentucky Electrical and Plumbing, and Nukum Graphics.

DTWC SET FOR SATURDAY AND SUNDAY
Excessive moisture on the speedway and grounds force change in schedule
Lawrenceburg, IN: Due to excessive amounts of rain that have fallen recently in the Lawrenceburg area leaving the Speedway grounds extremely wet and muddy and the racetrack at a point where it needs some drying Dirt Track World Championship Promoter Carl Short and Lawrenceburg Speedway promoter Dave Rudisell have made the difficult decision to re-schedule the DTWC for THIS SATURDAY AND SUNDAY Oct 17th & 18th.
“Dave and his crew tried in vain to work the track today”, said Short. Rudisell pointed to the amounts of rain from last weekend and what has fallen so far for the muddy conditions. “We want to give the racers the best surface possible and the fans the best race possible; with the forecast we have Saturday and Sunday will allow us to get it done”, said Rudisell. Both Short and Rudisell expressed safety for the racers as another reason for the two day delay. The only way they could’ve had the track ready would have been a very rough track and they didn’t want to put the cars out there like that and chance tearing up a lot of equipment un-necessarily.
Time schedule for this Saturday and Sunday are as follows; Gates will open each day at 9am with on track activities beginning at 12 noon.

O’Neal is just one of the Indiana drivers expected to try to qualify for the $50,000 to win Late Model event. HARTMAN LOOKS FOR SECOND DTWC WIN
Ohio Driver on a roll winning the World 100 and Pittsburgher
Lawrenceburg, IN: Zanesville, Ohio driver Bart Hartman is someone who won’t argue with luck, momentum or whatever you want to call it. Earlier this season the popular driver dropped off the Lucas Oil Series calling it a business decision verses a racing decision. After the last two weeks Hartman has pocketed over $70,000 winning the World 100 and The Pittsburgher. Hartman looks to ride that momentum thru the seasons end including the Dirt Track World Championship.
The 2001 winner of the DTWC is looking to do something that has only been done twice, winning the DTWC and the World 100 in the same season. Kentucky drivers Jack Boggs and Steve Francis to date are the only ones to pull off that feat. Hartman said, “I’ve only raced at Lawrenceburg once since they changed the track so we may be behind some of those guys but we’ve had a good car all year with this Rocket and just have had some bad luck issues”. Then he continued, “I really think we’ll have a good of as good of a shot as anyone there. It would be great to win a second Dirt Track World Championship and to be able to do that after winning the World and now the Pittsburgher would really be a nice way to cap off the year”.

If you've been a dirt late model fan for the past quarter-century, you know all about the Dirt Track World Championship, so for us to just be involved in some way is very cool. Not only is it our third year sponsoring the $1,000 Fast Time award, but the fact that we're at an all new facility, the buzz for the event is getting huge, and it makes the whole situation even better. The Lucas Oil race at Lawrenceburg in late-August was FANTASTIC, and I think with the dirt late model world focusing on this event, it will be another great race." DTWC Promoter Carl Short said, “We’re extremely pleased that Dirt on Dirt is continuing their support of the DTWC through the Fast Time Award. Michael Rigsby and Todd Turner have done a wonderful job with their website and their supporting this event and others shows that they want to help with the growth of our sport”.
When asked why a Fast Time Award Rigsby replied, "One thing we've found the past two years, at least in the pit area, giving away $1,000 for the fast time award REALLY has the drivers in the pits buzzing the entire weekend. They're asking me during all of time trials who is where, if they've still got a shot, and it really creates an extra bonus for the drivers that in some cases have driven hundreds of miles and spent thousands of dollars to come race. It's something they deserve to compete for, and I'm glad we can provide them a chance to make an extra thousand dollars that weekend."

DTWC goes HOOSIER
Carl Short is pleased to announce that the 2009 edition of the prestigious DIRT TRACK WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP will be contested on HOOSIER Racing Tires in both the Late Model and Modified division with servicing of the event provided by Hoosier Tire Midwest.
Hoosier Midwest General Manager Terry Young stated that it makes good common sense for the participants who will be able to attend the event with limited compounds and will make preparing for the event much simpler by not having to guess on which compounds they might use. Legendary promoter Short also stated "We too were trying to address the concerns of many competitors by limiting the number of tire choices". "We certainly look forward to Hoosier Midwest servicing our event and working with the competitors in making the event as succesful as it can be". Young stated that "we are also excited to be able to continue our long relationship with Carl Short and his entire crew".
Most every late model competitor in the area already has LM tires in their possession be it from use at Eldora or many of the local weekly tracks that utilize the UMP tire rule.
The DTWC will be contested utilizing LM ties in three compounds LM20, LM30 and LM40. The modified division will be contested using the E-MOD 26.5 and 27.5 D40, A40 or H40.
Tires can be pre-ordered by calling Hoosier Tire Midwest at (800) 365-1955. Additionally, parts and fuel will be available from Hoosier Racing Tire dealer Terry Eaglin Motorsports who services the track on a weekly basis.

DTWC Moves to Lawrenceburg, IN / Advance Tickets Now on Sale!
Lawrenceburg, IN: With all of the uncertainty swirling around KC Raceway this year, it was decided it was time for a change in venue for one of dirt racings biggest events. KC has been great but with the possibility of the track being closed all year or having a new owner it was decided a move was the best thing to ensure the continued quality event you have come to expect with the DTWC.
Promoter Carl Short had this to say, “After looking at many tracks and after much deliberation, it was decided Lawrenceburg Speedway would be an ideal fit. If you haven’t been to Lawrenceburg, you are in for a real treat. Besides the great central location and easy access, Lawrenceburg is one of the nicest facilities anywhere. I am sure that like us, you will fall in love with it.
I have heard from several fans that seem to think that because it is Indiana, it is a long way away. Nothing could be further from the truth. Lawrenceburg is actually a Cincinnati suburb. It sits only a few miles from the Kentucky state line as well as a few miles from the Ohio state line. It is in a great centralized location.
This year we have added what we think will be an instant hit. In addition to the $50,000 to win DTWC and the $3,000 to win modified race that has been such a hit with fans, we are adding a $5,000 to win non-wing sprint race. If you haven’t ever attended a non-wing sprint event, we think after you do, you will have to agree, the action is incredible”.

DTWC to Lawrenceburg IN. Speedway
Lawrenceburg Indiana; Promoter Carl Short made the announcement Saturday that thousands of race fans all over the country have been waiting for. The 29 annual DTWC will be held at one of the premier dirt facilities in the country. Lawrenceburg Speedway! “I have been to dirt tracks all over the country and Lawrenceburg is one of the nicest venues you will find anywhere” Short stated.
This year’s decision on where to hold the DTWC was especially hard as Short had quite a few well known tracks from several states vying for the opportunity to hold the nationally known “Crown Jewel” event. “It is really heartbreaking to have to say no to so many great people and facilities” Short said. “I am sure that most if not all of them could have done a great job of hosting the DTWC but Lawrenceburg’s qualities all seemed to be a good fit for the criteria I was looking for” Short continued.
“I really wanted to keep the DTWC in the Ohio Valley and in reasonable proximity to where it has been held previously. Lawrenceburg meets both of those criteria as well as having great access which makes it really nice for the fans” Short said. In addition Lawrenceburg has ample space for hundreds of campers and still plenty of parking for the fans.
This year Carl Short has a special treat for the fans in attendance. The economy isn’t in the best of shape and everybody is looking for the best value they can find when it comes to entertainment. Ticket prices have remained the same for over ten years now even though the purse has continued to go up each year. For a $40 general admission ticket fans have been able to see 3 days of great racing with over a hundred late models and over a hundred Modifieds. This year, Short is adding a $5,000 to win non winged Sprint show, while still holding the line on prices. “Forty dollars for the $50,000 to win DTWC, a $5,000 to win non winged Sprint show and a $3,000 to win modified show has to be as good as it gets” Short stated.
Lawrenceburg Speedway promoter David Rudisell stated that he is very excited to have a race with the statue of the DTWC coming to Lawrenceburg. “There has been several million dollars spent here in the last few years and the DTWC will be the perfect vehicle to showcase what we feel is one of the nicest venues in short track racing.

DTWC RECEIVES OUTSTANDING SHORT TRACK EVENT AWARD
Lake Mary, Florida: The Dirt Track World Championship has long been recognized as one of the premier events in Dirt Late Model Racing. This past week in Lake Mary, Florida, DTWC founder and promoter Carl Short was asked to stop by the Annual Promoters Workshop to meet a few people. Short had not planned to attend the workshops this year so what happened next was a total surprise.
After meeting with several people, he was asked if he would at least come into the workshop for a short visit. There were some interesting speakers such as Humpy Wheeler speaking and then award presentations for things such as regional promoters of the year and promoter of the year. Then came the award for "The Outstanding Annual Short Track Event Of The Year," presented by National Speed Sport News. Short said you could have knocked him over with a feather when the announcer said, "and the award goes to The Dirt Track World Championship."
Something that started back in 1981 at Pennsboro Speedway in West Virginia has grown into a major Motorsports event drawing fans and spectators from all over the country. Carl Short had this to say about receiving the award: "I want to thank the Promoters who voted for this award. It is an extreme honor for the Dirt Track World Championship to receive this award and it is especially meaningful coming from my fellow Promoters."
The Dirt Track World Championship has been held at several tracks since its beginning at Pennsboro. "I would like to thank all of the people over the years that have helped build the DTWC into the "Crown Jewel" event it has become," says Short. "I'd like to thank my staffs who throughout the years have worked to help me with the event and the Speedways where the DTWC has been held. They are all a big part of what the DTWC has become and I certainly couldn't have done it without them."
Short said he would especially like to thank his competition director Larry Boos. "I think Larry runs the most efficient show of anybody in the business," Short stated. "When you are worried about cold temperatures, Larry is definitely the man you want running the show." Short also said that not unlike most husbands, he would be nowhere without his devoted wife by his side to help him. "Shauna is my rock and I depend on her for so much. I know all the husbands out there will know what I'm talking about."
Watch for news coming soon about the 2009 DTWC.

28th Annual Dirt Track World Championship goes to Birkhofer Official Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
By Scott Wolfe
CHILLICOTHE, OHIO- The Dirt Track World Championship always brings some type of magic to it. Saturday's 28th annual DTWC by gottarace.com before most likely its largest K-C crowd was no exception. "Dominating!" That one word is an understatement, but the closest word Webster had to offer in describing Brian Birkhofer's most prestigious career win. What started as a firefight in Carl Short’s premier event, quickly turned into a cakewalk as Muscatine, Iowa driver Brian Birkhofer pulled off the $50,000 victory in the late model portion of the DTWC program at Jim Nier's K-C Raceway near Chillicothe, Ohio.
It was indeed a magical performance and Birky was the house magician. The veteran driver turned much more than a hat-trick in taming the world's toughest dirt track stars before a packed house at K-C Raceway. Birkhofer's victory aboard his Mars/Birkhofer Chassis/Pro-Power Engines, Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS equaled his biggest career payday. The Daufeldt Transport/J & J Steel/Simon Trucking entry outclassed the rest of the field in a huge fashion, lapping all but the top nine cars. Like an Olympian, Birkhofer paced to the lead on lap 37, then flexed his muscle to take the Gold, decimating the field to that of also-rans.
"I'm kind of teared up right now," said the winner in victory lane. "I appreciate what I've got. This race means a lot, I've finished second at the DTWC twice, and finally...finally, we got it...$50,000 and the DTWC trophy. I'd like to thank Carl Short and everyone who makes this race possible. Keeping this race going and bringing it to K-C has been a great thing for racing, and a great thing for me personally. "
"The car was awesome tonight," continued Birkhofer. "I could put it anywhere on the track. A lot of people have helped me --Jimmy Mars, Tim McCreadie-- my crew. We've worked hard at this and we feel we put together some pretty good race cars. If I'm turning right out there, I feel like I'm not going anywhere. Sometimes at some tracks it hurts me, but it (keeping the car straight) was fast here and usually is pretty good to me."
Shane Clanton, Locust Grove, GA hooked up first at the drop of the green over pole-sitter Tim McCreadie. Clanton quickly opened up a five-car-length lead. Three-wide, four-wide and scattered all across the fast 3/8 mile high banks, the field of dirt racing's elite were aggressively putting on a whale of a show. Clanton led the parade through traffic as McCreadie and Colonel Steve Francis, Ashland, KY marched back into contention. Lying in wait, Birkhofer-at this point-was mapping his strategy for the finale.
McCreadie bid for the lead against Clanton, nearly rubbing doors, but the Watertown, NY driver lost the handle on lap 17, then recovered to remain in the top ten. McCreadie's miscue came just as Birkhofer had made it a four-way race for number one. The front trio scattered as McCreadie shuffled to midpack with Clanton continuing his charge up front. Clanton shut the door hard on Birky on the 23rd circuit, unknowingly sticking his finger in the flood gate that was soon about to burst.
Clanton, Birkhofer and Francis sounded more like a law firm than a high-flying stock car trio, but the three indeed laid down the law as the race’s top performers. The “Crown Jewell’s” first caution came for a stalled Davey Johnson on the 24th circuit sending him pit-side for repairs.
Now Scott Bloomquist was poised for a run to the front. The race's big three, however, outdistanced the Tennessee stalwart and began the second long run of the race. Additionally, the Jim Dunn Memorial winner Eddie Carrier, Jr. continued to charge by competitors in his effort to make his DTWC/Arizona Sports Shirts decision a profitable one.
The next several laps saw Birkhofer stalk his prey. Straight and fast, Birkhofer watched Clanton's mount tail-off into the turns. Birky took the lead on lap 37 as Clanton went high and his foe dove evasively low to create a high speed sandwich around the soon-to-be lapped car of R.J. Conley.
Francis and Dan Schlieper made contact on the 41st go-round, sending Schlieper into a tail spin and to the tail. The laps clicked off quickly as Davey Johnson rejoined the field 17 laps down.
Nine shy of the halfway mark, Francis bagged Clanton for second. Drivers jockeyed for position deep into the pack, using every inch of the fast K-C turf. High against the wall, Jimmy Mars sent a trail of sparks, while some driver’s hugged the bottom and everywhere in between to find the needed speed. As Birkhofer widened his lead to half a straight, Clanton and Francis battled door-to-door as if they were bolted together as one.
The Muscatine, IA ace was back in traffic at the mid-point with a padded lead over Clanton and Francis. Some of the best names in the business became casualties of the high-flying Birkhofer. More were to come.
Turns three and four laid down heavy rubber, while turns one and two held a little more moisture, making the track a different kind of fast on both ends. Birkhofer's hybrid mount and half MARS-car seemed to have the best handle on the high banks, stretching his lead to a full straight by lap 68.
McCreadie picked up a few of the positions he had lost early in the race, while Bloomquist, Rick Eckert, and Jimmy Mars battled for fourth. Francis regained the second spot on lap 73, but Clanton did not go down without a fight, retaking the runner-up slot two laps later. If passing points counted in the outcome, that duo would have topped the field in a battle that K-C voice Bruce Hines called a pack of sharks looking for blood. The intense fighting, however, all the more took its toll as Birkhofer stretched it out to a full half-lap.
McCreadie worked his way by Eckert in a great run back to the top five just as Birkhofer lapped the twelfth place car of Josh Richards on lap 85. Absolute domination in a landslide run, Birkhofer blitzed the field, lapping tenth place Jimmy Owens with six laps to go. The distance of victory translated into a seven second lead at the finish.
Clanton brought home second after claiming a personal victory over fellow combatant Francis with Bloomquist and McCreadie rounding out the top five.
With only two cautions, the race was run in only 37 minutes with the checkered flag waving at 10:38, sending a well-satisfied crowd back to the camp sites for post race festivities. Birkhofer was joined by family and friends in a wild victory lane celebration, where he received the towering DTWC by gottarace.com championship trophy and "Crown Jewell" championship ring.
Rounding out the top ten behind Birkhofer were Shane Clanton, Steve Francis, Scott Bloomquist, Tim McCreadie, Rick Eckert, Jimmy Mars, Darrell Lanigan, Darren Miller, and Jimmy Owens.
Bear Lake, PA driver Chub Frank, the defending DTWC champ, claimed the Dirtondirt.com $1,000 fast time award with a 14:674 clocking in the field of 106 cars.
The preliminary heats were like features and the B-mains like mega-features. Not only were the competitors big-name racers, but the action was major league as well. Tight, competitive racing action highlighted the action, that set the stage for Saturday’s main event. One of the most impressive races was the Jim Dunn Memorial where Carl Short upped the ante by paying the winner $2,500 or offering him a spot in the DTWC. Driver for the JDM were drawn out of a hat prior to hot laps.
A pair of WV drivers Joe Loudin and Corey Conley paced the Jim Dunn Memorial star-studded line-up to the green. Nick Bocook, however, brought things to a halt when his mount caught the end of the wall and spiraled wildly back toward the infield as the rear half the field took evasive action.
Conley took the lead on the restart with a hard-charging Eddie Carrier, Jr. close in tow. With one lap in the books, a caution waved for a spinning Tim Dohm. Five more action-packed circuits passed before Freddy Smith lost an oil line to bring out another yellow.
Carrier quickly made quick business of Conley, opening the door for hot shoes Jeep VanWormer and Matt Miller. By this time Donnie Moran had charged from 16th to 6th while Miller had gunned it from 9th to third, shuffling Conley back to fourth. VanWormer had come out of nowhere in a hurry as he to was in fast-forward in a 12th-to-second run.
The fast surface of the K-C high banks made for plenty of passing throughout the field, as announcer James Essex said "hang on", as excitement escalated to a late race climax. Carrier's Rocket was set on "launch" as Miller tried to pull off the hat trick.
The Buckeye Bandit Miller found the Salt Rock Flash Carrier in traffic nearly making the pass on lap 21. Scrubbing off speed Miller had to reset as a torrid side-by-side battle developed. A lap 23 caution may have been Carrier's savior as the WV ace distanced himself from his nemesis on the restart and went on to the win.
"Matt (Miller) was a little harder on the right rear than I was, but mine was starting to go (away) fast right before the last yellow,” exclaimed Carrier. “I was really glad to see the caution. I needed that to give my tires a chance to cool off."
Then came the big question. Would Carrier take the money and run? "Before we came out here, my boss (Carl Grover) told me what we were going to do. You know where I'm going to be, put that trophy (Jim Dunn Memorial hardware) away. We're gonna race. You never know what can happen. This (the DTWC) is what we came for."
Mike Marlar transferred after winning the first B-main and earlier posting a dismal 66th fast time.

28TH Annual Dirt Track World Championship Modified official release
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MODIFIEDS
By Scott Wolfe 10/18/2008
CHILLICOTHE, OHIO-Loretta, Kentucky driver Jason Wheatley put his name in the record books as the winner of the 28th Annual Dirt Track World Championship by gottarace.com modified portion of Carl Short's "Crown Jewell" event at Jim Nier's K-C Raceway.
"I've always liked this track, but I've never had any luck here," sighed an obviously overjoyed Wheatley. "I ran out of gas here, I got in a wreck, and I got into one of those big uke tires y'all have down there. I felt like this place owed me one, but this will make up for it."
"The restarts were killing me," Wheatley noted. "He ( Rick Hensley) was getting a good jump and holding a good, fast line on the bottom. I had some good runs on him, but when I'd get set to make the pass, here came a caution. I knew if I was gonna get by I had to move up and make a move. We got together a little bit, but we kept it clean and I was fortunate enough to get by for the win."
Three days of first class, wheel-to-wheel racing culminated with Saturday night's first feature event-- the Open Wheel Modified main. With champions from many of regions top series, and many track champions the racing proved to be as good as it gets in any racing venue. One hundred-eleven cars from eight states and Ontario, Canada took time trials for opening night of the 28th annual Dirt Track World Championship at Jim Nier's K-C Raceway between Waverly and Chillicothe. Matt Aber of Wooster, Ohio, set fast time 0f 16:021 with an average speed of 105.3 miles per hour on the 3/8 mile clay oval.
Oak Hill, Ohio driver Rick Hensley and Wheatley paced the field to starter Daryl Owen's green flag. As the field thundered into turn one, Wheatly got the jump as Jason Hall shuffled Hensley back to third. AMRA stalwart Jess Hartman's run ended early as he coasted to a halt in turn four before lap one could be completed, and the race had its first restart.
A complete restart once again created anxiety as the tunnel into turn one narrowed. Hall T-boned the end of the turn three wall, collecting Jason Montgomery who slammed the idle Hall broadslide. Kent Robinson and Shon Flannery piled in with Robinson going pit-side to change tires.
On the third try at a start, Hensley propelled to the top spot and led the freight train through the first seven circuits. The trio of Hensley, Wheatley, and Chris Stotts began to pull away from the rest of the field, only to have Bob Crace, Jr. loop it in turn four.
Without explanation, the top trio jettisoned away from fourth place Kevin Morehouse at the drop of the green. On lap ten J.E. Stalder did a 360 on the back chute, collecting former AMRA champ Mark Dickson. Parkersburg's (WV) Kenny Riddle, the flying Fireman, nearly extinguished his mount with some incidental contact from a turn two altercation and went wingless the rest of the way.
Veteran Davey Groves charged through the pack into the top five, pulling youngster Jacob Hawkins along for the ride. By lap 14, Keith Berner--already a starter in the Late Model version of the DTWC-- had charged from 24th to 8th. Berner found some traction high against the thinning cushion as Hensley continued to flex his muscle at the head of the pack.
The Hensley-Wheatley-Stotts connection throttled to the green with Stotts diving low for a bid on Wheatley. Wheatley pulled the Athens, Ohio driver, but Groves had more success in towing Hawkins past a fading Morehouse. Berner moved by Morehouse and Michael Davis to pick up a couple more spots, but his run was about to stall most likely at the hands of exhausted rubber. Aukland, a past winner of both the Jim Dunn race and DTWC modifieds, went around in turn three, but managed to keep his mount on the go.
Hensley hunkered in low on the bottom with Wheatley giving chase. Finally, Wheatley went high side and overtook Hensley on the 23rd go-round, while Berner challenged Stotts for third. Meanwhile, Stotts closed in on Hensley and dove low while Berner rode high to the two lap signal. They finished in that order as Wheatley checked out for the DTWC win.
Rounding out the top ten behind Wheatley were Hensley, Stotts, Berner, Davey Groves, Jacob Hawkins, Brian Ruhlman, Michael Davis, Jerry Bowersock, and Kevin Morehouse
All of the preliminary heat races were reflective of feature events for regular race nights as 16-18 cars made the starting grid for each of the six qualifying events. In the Thursday Modified action, Kentucky driver Dave McWilliams was the early leader of heat number one until banging the wall on lap six, when he exited to the infield about the same time that Blaine Aber tagged the end of the turn four wall. Kevin Morehouse charged on to the win over Mark Dickson and Jerry Bowersock. The top three in each heat transferred directly to the Dirt Track World Championship A-Main.
The second heat was a scorcher as Jason Hall of Hindman, KY blitzed to the win over Jesse Hartman, and Dave Definbaugh. Chris Stotts, Jake Hawkins, and J.D. Stalder finished in that order after a great battle in the third heat. In heat four the transfers were Jason Wheatley, Sam Lovejoy, and Michael Davis. Dave "Fireball" Pinkerton came from 8th to 4th making one of the best charges of the night.
Kenny Johnson, after flipping in qualifying, was running a solid second in his heat only to lose the handle, where he was relegated to the tail. Johnson came off the tail of the C to transfer, then came up to second in the "B" before spinning with five laps to go. Still he came back to finish seventh, passing more cars than anyone for the night. Twice Johnson had put his mount in the "A" with just a few laps to go, but being the showman that he is, he didn't stop at second.
Doug Adkins, another favorite broke in the sixth heat and nearly missed the C main. The race had actually started with Adkins not making the call, but Steve Bobo and Adkins found new life when the first lap was not completed. Adkins earned a transfer spot to the "B" by coming off the tail, but was shy of a transfer to the "A".
Kenny Riddle, Rich Michael, and Larry Holbrook; along with Rick Hensley, Dave Groves, and Adam Colley were the transfers in heats five and six. C-main winners were Louis Krushansky and Rob Stambaugh.
The B-mains produced some of the weekend's best racing in a warehouse of great races to choose from. Columbus, OH driver Bobby Kitchen claimed the first B-main over Kent Robinson, while former K-C Late Model Champ beat Eldora/Sunoco ace Brian Ruhlman to qualify to the A in B-main number two. In the final prelim, Rick Aukland bested another former K-C Late Model champ Keith Berner, who made both portions of the DTWC.
In the modifieds Bob Crace, Jr. the very first DTWC Modified champ got a break when Dave Defibaugh's mount suffered an engine malfunction. Crace was added to the field as an alternate on the basis of being 2008 K-C's track champion.
